Review: BeCyPDFMetaEdit Remove Encrypted PDF Passwords

BeCyPDFMetadata running 1By concensus, we have to give two ‘Razzie’ style awards; worst product website http://www.becyhome.de since GeoCities shut down and worst product name since Nissan Sunny. Being fair, the site is a .de domain in both English and Deutche by a one-man development shop more interested in software than a flashy website. And everything is branded with the BeCy prefix. Getting past that, the need for a utility to remove passwords from PDF files has long been acknowledged.

The BeCyPDFMetaEdit was created for this task (note, this task is removing passwords no longer required, not cracking PDF files which don’t belong to you!) BeCyPDFMetaEdit is a freeware program for Windows that can remove passwords from encrypted PDFs without making any other changes to the content of the files.

BeCyPDFMetadata running 2When downloading and installing the small 452kb installer file, you might want to clear the checkbox associating all PDF’s with this utility. Open a PDF file with BeCyPDFMetaEdit, select the option “Complete rewrite,” enter the file’s password and choose remove encryption in the Security tab. Save the PDF back out to remove the security element of the file’s metadata whilst keeping all other data unchanged. BeCyPDFMetaEdit will flash you a notification box from which you can choose to open the PDF in your regular reader – sans password. It works with Adobe produced PDF’s and Libre Office PDF’s, which is good enough for me.

BeCyPDFMetadata running 3It’s a friendly enough desktop program, compatible with all Windows versions and all PDF’s written using the standard Adobe PDF specification.

Similar programs exist: PDF-Crack, Doro PDF Writer, PDFUnlock!, PDFProtect and PDF Pirate, which are more or less attractive and more or less successful at removing the encryption. Not all are free as this is.
